Prep Guide

You will be spending your time outdoors immersed in the program more than 8 hours each day and this information will help you prepare. Here you will learn what you can expect and what things are good to bring with you to make your stay as comfortable and fun as possible.

LAUNDRY We will provide laundry service for a small fee.

THE SUN The sun in Nicaragua is lovely and it is also very strong. Always cover yourself and be careful not to spend to much time in direct sunlight. Always use sunblocks if your skin is white. Drink a minimum of 3 liters of water per day. 1 liter immediately after each yoga class. Don’t forget to bring your water bottle, sunglasses, sunblock and hat.

THE OCEAN We lovel the ocean and we get to share it with other living beeings. There are sting rays that won’t be happy if you step on them so please shuffle your feet when you walk into the ocean. If you get stung there is nothing to worry about, just let us know and we will take care of you.

SAFETY Nicaragua is considered the safest country in Central America with the lowest crime rate and so far we have had no incidents but we want to remind you of being mindful and never go swimming or hiking alone. Also never leave any valuable items unguarded.

INTERNET Time to reconnect and disconnect and a great opportunity to digitally detox. The yoga center is tech-free and we encourage all students to let go of the smart phone arm. We recommend that you purchase a SIM card from Movie Star that works with your phone if you need internet. Moviestar is the network that works best from Ostional. If you need help please ask us and we will be happy to assist you.

DAYS OFF We take two days off, usually Saturdays. During those two days you are free to go to San Juan del Sur or other nearby beaches. The yoga center and the kitchen are closed for cleaning during those days which means that we will not serve any meals.

HEALTH Contact your health care center before traveling and ask them about what vaccinations you need. Students frequently ask us about the danger with mosquitos. There are little mosquitos in the area in and around Ostional because it is often very windy and most mosquitos are in the forest, inland. We recommend that you bring mosquito repellent and use it after sunset.

INSURANCE Contact your insurance company and make sure you have sufficient cover for your travel. In case of emergency we are fully prepared to help but you have to cover the expenses for medical bills and transportation to Rivas or Managua.

MONEY Bring US$ and/or Cordobas in small bills and your ATM card. There are a few small shops in Ostional where you can buy snacks and drinks. There are also a couple of small diners. You also might want to bring some extra cash for boat tours or kaiak rent.

TIPPING It is customary but not obligatory to tip the staff at the end and of your stay. They have been working hard to make your stay fantastic. Our guests usually tip the staff (the staff at the YOGA RANCHO) with 2-4 US$ per day from each one of the students. That will be 40 – 80 US$ from every student for the whole period, not much but it is up to you what you tip.

SPANISH We encourage you to study some Spanish prior to your visit. It is always fun and very polite speaking the native language even if you only know a few words or phrases.

WELCOME TO OSTIONAL People in the village are happy to welcome you. Please be respectful of the locals and their village. Be mindful of you behavior while you are a guest in Ostional. It is always polite to communicate in Spanish. In Ostional we greet people on the street or on the beach even if we do not know them 🙂
